Week 3 Action Plan

Action Plan Goal: Identify if an online learning system (i.e. Moodle) when used in conjunction with face-to-face instruction can raise student achievement for students that are absent for an extended period of time from regular classroom instruction.   Identify the benefits to the classroom teacher when using an online learning system.

Identify Study Classrooms and students. Since Moodle is new in the district, classrooms teachers that are willing to learn the system for the study must first be identified. Two classrooms from each core area should be used, and at least five classrooms from non-core areas. Target students will be mostly ninth and tenth grade students enrolled in beginning level classes. Train ISS Level I and II instructors on how to use Moodle. These instructors will be the facilitators for the students that are out of class for discipline referrals.	L. Create student surveys. Students that are absent for an extended period of time for discipline reasons or other reasons will be asked to complete an online survey using Survey Monkey about their experience using the online learning system. Data Collection: Student Surveys (Classrooms using online learning system) – As students return from ISS Level I, ISS Level II or an extended absence, they will be administered a brief survey about the effectiveness of the online learning system. Compare that to the list of students assigned to ISS Level I and ISS Level II to ensure that students are filling out a survey.
Data Collection: Student Surveys (classrooms not using an online learning system) – Students assigned to ISS Level I and Level II that are not in the classrooms using Moodle will be given a survey about the effectiveness of receiving and completing their assignments. Data Collection: Teacher Surveys – teachers will be issued a survey at the end of each grading period to evaluate the effectiveness of the online learning system	L. Data Collection: Chart student grades at the beginning of the extended absence, immediately following the absence and at the end of the grading period. Chart grades of random students not in the research classrooms that are assigned to ISS Level I and Level II.	L. Data Analysis: All student and teacher surveys will be summarized with an item-by-item analysis of the responses.	L. Teacher surveys will be used to determine the benefits of using an online learning system.
Data Analysis: Charted data will be summarized and grouped by students using online learning systems and students not using online learning systems.	L.Holmes	May	Excel charts of data	The charted data will show whether student grades improved, stayed the same or declined after an extended absence. This can be compared with the data from the students that were not using an online learning system to complete their work.
Final Report: Finding of this research project will be shared with the leadership team of the campus.	L.
